A few weeks ago I was invited to submit an idea for a talk or demo that I could do on the Stitch Stage at @thestitchfestival

There were already so many amazing workshops on at the event, so it was hard to come up with an new idea. The idea of sewing a tote bag popped into my head. It was the first project I’d ever sewn, so this felt like a good choice! I decided to design and create my own pattern for the pitch, so I spent a day drafting, sewing and photographing my first sample! I submitted my pitch and it was accepted!

Since then I’ve been developing the pattern. The original version, pictured here, featured a drawstring handle but I came to realise that it only worked well in cotton lawn. I tweaked my design to remove the drawstring, but I kept the curve area below the handle and kept the lining.
I wanted the pattern to be a stepping a stone for someone who could sew straight seams and wanted to learn about new techniques that they may come across in future projects, like making clothes!

My new version of the pattern now looks a little different to this one and I’ll share more details about it soon. I can tell you that it’s a great tote bag for when I have *big sleeve energy.* The new handle with the curve seam below gives me plenty of room to put the bag on my shoulder even when I’m wearing an oversized jumper or dolman sleeves.

The pattern will be a freebie from @printsewingpatterns for newsletter subscribers. That’s my pdf pattern printing company! It hasn’t launched yet, but I’m working on it!
