When I was around 14 or 15 years, I used to head to my grandma’s house after school and have dinner there, before heading home in the early evenings. The winter nights grew dark quickly and I longed for the sun to return. As I’d been trapped in classrooms all day, it felt like I’d barely had a chance to enjoy the daylight. I missed the feeling of the sun against my skin.
One evening, as I made my way home, I spotted three stars in the sky all lined up in a row. I thought that was pretty cool. The next night I saw them again, and then again. I began to realise that even in the darkness, there was something to look forward to.
From then on, and even to this day, on a dark clear night I’ll take a moment to look up at the sky in search of my three stars.
Skipping forward to early 2018, I’d decided to open a fabric shop. I had to come up with a name and I initially picked something generic and SEO friendly. Then it occurred to me to look up what my three stars were called. They’re commonly known as Orion’s belt, but according to Wikipedia, they’re also referred to as the three kings or the three sisters. The top right star is called Mintaka… can you see where I’m going with this? Yes, that’s how I came up with the name of my fabric shop, Sister Mintaka.
It’s beautifully unique and it means so much to me.
